  8.          The Mariner 9 spacecraft at Mars will resume transmis- 
  9. sion to Earth of Mars photographs and other science data on  
  10. Friday, October 13. 
  11.          The photographs will be displayed on TV monitors, as  
  12. received, in the Von Karman press room at the Jet Propulsion  
  13. Laboratory, 4800 Oak Grove Drive, Pasadena, from 12:30 p.m.  
  14. thru 4:30 p.m. 
  15.          This will be one of the last picture playbacks from  
  16. Mariner as it is estimated that sufficient attitude control gas  
  17. remains for only a few playbacks.  The next playback, gas per- 
  18. mitting, is scheduled for October 17. 
  19.          Mariner 9 reached Mars on November 13, 1971, completed  
  20. its assigned 90 days at the planet and has continued to operate  
  21. well beyond the time alloted. 
  22.          The spacecraft has mapped the entire planet, returning  
  23. 7,273 photographs.  The photographs revealed an unexpected sur- 
  24. face with huge volcanoes, 2 mile deep canyons and what appears  
  25. to be ancient streambeds carved by running water. 
  26.          A 35-foot long mosaic of thousands of pictures showing  
  27. the canyons and volcanoes is on exhibit in the press room.
